"Put Reading First", a National Reading Panel Report (2000), has identified 5 skills that are key for future reading achievement.  Please take the time to help your child become a better reader with these key items:

  1. Phonemic Awareness

  2. Phonics

  3. Fluency

  4. Vocabulary

  5. Text Comprehension

A Literacy Program promotes literacy for all students. A Support Program provides additional instruction for students requiring an extra boost. We typically work with students within the classroom setting. On a more focused level, we occasionally see students in small groups outside of the classroom. Our Reading Assistants can also assist classroom teachers in facilitating small-group instruction by providing additional classroom support.

A Literacy Closet provides a variety of materials for student and teacher use. We have a wealth of fiction and non-fiction titles, representing a variety of subjects at many different reading levels. Most of our titles directly relate to subjects our students study in social studies and science, and provide opportunities for thematic study that meet the diverse needs of our students. The Literacy Closet also serves as a resource for teachers, providing instructional materials and references.

The Literature Enrichment program is one of the special studies typically provided to first and second grades. Through the use of picture books and follow-up activities, we focus on directly supporting skills and strategies taught by the classroom teachers, typically related to the themes presented by the school’s basal reader series.

Throughout the year on an informal basis, the Literacy Program provides assessment services to teachers who have concerns about specific students. On a more regular basis, Literacy staff conducts fluency checks on students currently receiving support. The Literacy Program also guide the yearly school-wide administration of The Gates-MacGinitie Test of Reading, which is the measurement tool the district uses to track our students’ progress in reading.
