Make Way For Ducklings!!!

In the spring, our first graders will be learning how things change over time by hatching ducklings in our classrooms.  The fertilized duck eggs arrive at our school in late March.  These egg are donated from a local farmer and will go back to the farm once the ducklings hatch.  We place the eggs in an incubator set at 100 degrees.  The eggs need to be turned a few times a day and sprayed with water to keep them moist.

In the coming weeks, while waiting for the ducklings to hatch, we learn about the parts of the egg, the growth process of a duckling, and be introduced to various children’s books on egg hatching .  It will take 28 days for the ducklings to hatch.  The ducks will keep warm in a brooder until they are old enough to go back to the farm (usually right before April vacation).
