A Few Facts About Ducks
- Ducks are one member of the water bird family called “Waterfowl.”
- Waterfowl have two characteristics in common:
- webbed feet to help them swim and dive
- waterproof feathers
- Female ducks are called ‘hens.”
- Male ducks are called “drakes.”
- There are 150 different kinds of ducks in the world.
- Some ducks live in the same area year round while other ducks fly to warmer places in the winter. This is called “migration.”
- In the spring, a migrating duck will return to the same place where they were hatched and raised.
- A mother hen will make her nest near the water.
- A mother hen will lay one egg a day until there are ten or twelve eggs.
- A group of eggs is called a “clutch.”
- A group of ducklings is called a “brood.”
